Back in the ’80s, a woman named Barbara was involved in a serious car accident. She suffered three blows to her head, and when she woke up at the hospital, she couldn’t remember her name. In fact, she couldn’t remember much of anything.
When a man rushed into the hospital room and kissed her, Barbara was utterly confused. She had no idea this man was John, her husband of 12 years. John was shocked to learn that Barbara was suffering from amnesia.
Doctors were confident her memory would return in about a week, since amnesia is typically a short-term condition. Barbara was terrified when she returned home. Her two daughters, 8 and 11, ran to greet her — but she didn’t remember them, either.
To help kick-start her memory, John and the girls tried showing her old family photos. Nothing worked. To make matters worse, Barbara also forgot to read, write, and cook. She became completely dependent on John, who had to take care of Barbara as if she were a child. But to her, John was still a total stranger.
A whole year passed, and Barbara’s memory had yet to return. She was overcome with depression. But when she entered vocational rehabilitation, she discovered a passion for upholstery, fixing cars, and using her hands. It was through this new program that a whole new identity emerged, along with a newfound sense of self-confidence.
Barbara began getting to know her husband all over again — and finally, something incredible started to happen…
