From bait dog to service dog…
Kristy’s 6-year-old son William has anxiety, ADHD, and sensory processing disorder. After William’s beloved grandmother died, his symptoms only worsened.
The concerned mom reached out to Kalamazoo Animal Rescue in Michigan, hoping a service dog could help her son cope.
That’s where Jay, a 3-year-old purebred American bulldog, entered the picture. Kristy saw the dog’s photo online and instantly wanted to meet her.
Nothing could prepare Kristy for the heartbreaking truth about Jay’s past. Before she was rescued, Jay was living on a cement floor and being used as a fighting ring bait dog. She was found on the side of the road with a 10-pound industrial chain around her neck — from which she’d managed to break free and escape. This dog was clearly desperate and determined not only to survive but to find herself a better life.
This poor dog was starving. She had deep wounds and sores all over her body, severed ears, and the remnants of duct tape once wrapped around her muzzle.
Despite Jay’s nightmarish history, Kristy still thought it best to introduce the dog to William. Perhaps they could help heal one another, she thought.
And wait until you see Jay today.
