You’re about to witness the amazing bond between a baby elephant named Kham La and a sanctuary volunteer named Darrick. As Darrick arrives on the pasture, he begins calling out for Kham La. The sound of his voice is enough to make the entire herd run straight towards Darrick’s direction — and the greeting that comes seconds later is nothing short of incredible.
From the booming sound of their trumpets to the stomping of their feet as they gallop in Darrick’s direction, it’s as if you can feel their excitement through the screen. I absolutely love how Kham La grasps Darrick’s hand with her trunk, as if they’re two human friends holding hands. Clearly, Darrick has a wonderful way with these beautiful animals, as they’ve come to trust and love him.
Kham La and her herd live at the Elephant Nature Park, an elephant rescue and rehabilitation center in Northern Thailand. Kham La (which means “Darling”) was born in 2011. She and her mother were both rescued brought to the Elephant Nature Park to begin a happy, healthy new life. And here I thought it wasn’t possible to love elephants more.
