Artists Create Beautiful Keepsakes From Loved Ones’ Ashes

When a loved one passes away, part of the healing process is to create a beautiful and meaningful memorial for them.

There are countless ways to do this, from making photo albums to designing a memorial stone to simply telling your favorite stories about that person.

But one company is offering a beautifully artsy solution that helps keep a departed loved one close for generations.

Artful Ashes, located in Seattle, incorporates ashes into art glass sculptures that can be cherished forever.

Incorporating ashes into an art piece is a touching way to honor a loved one, whether through a sculpture like this, or in a tattoo in which the ashes are mixed with the ink, which was the choice of one veteran.

Using just a tablespoon of ash per piece, Artful Ashes creates a one-of-a-kind sculpture to honor a family’s loved one.

Combined with a custom blend of jewel-toned colors, the ashes float in a swirl inside the glass like the tail of a comet or like sea foam, making a beautiful, lasting memorial.

Check out some of their creations for various families below, as well as some fascinating behind-the-scenes photos of a sculpture’s creation!

At first glance, you might think this was just an ordinary glass paperweight with a pretty iridescent swirl. But what you’re actually seeing are the ashes of a loved one, suspended in glass.

Artful Ashes creates the sculptures in both spherical and heart-shaped forms, and each one is handmade to order, so no two are alike.

What’s more, local families can actually come to the studio and participate as the sculpture is being created.

They can pick out which complimenting colors they’d like their sculpture to have, and really make the piece their own.

They’ll also watch the ashes be rolled right into the molten glass to be preserved for eternity.

This freshly made heart sculpture is still glowing red from the intense heat of the kiln, but you can see the swirls in it. The pale, foamy-looking swirl is the ashes.

And if a family can’t make it to Seattle, the company also ships countrywide.

And because each sculpture uses only about a tablespoon of ash, multiple sculptures can be made for various family members. And they even come with little lights to really show off their beauty!

Artful Ashes’ clients have said that having these memorials that they can touch and look at has eased the passing of their loved ones.

Many have written their heartfelt thanks to the company and expressed how the sculptures are a great source of comfort.

One customer wrote: “When my father passed away, it was difficult to explain cremation to our young children. Having ‘Boppa’s’ ashes in a beautiful and tangible form has helped our children reconnect with my dad. Even as an adult, it brings me so much comfort to have such a bright and uplifting reminder that my dad is still present in our lives. Thank you so much for your amazing work!”

Families can also choose a unique style and color to reflect their loved one, like this beachy blue and green…

…or this modernist black that makes the white ashes stand out.

A clear orb with some sparkle is lovely and ethereal.

And a memorial can be made for everyone in the family. Many people give them as gifts.

They’re a unique way to remember a loved one, and they’ll also last forever, making them a family keepsake to be treasured for years to come.

It might not be conventional, but it’s a beautiful way to keep the memory of a loved one alive.
