An Army veteran is being called a hero this this month after he saved the life of a pit bull being kicked by two vicious attackers during a thunderstorm in Las Vegas.

Blue, a 9-year-old pit bull, had reportedly gotten spooked during a thunderstorm and managed to run off, finding herself a significant distance from her family’s home and stranded in the rain. Two attackers spotted her and allegedly began kicking Blue against a metal gate. That’s when Army veteran Lee Coffman drove by, saw what was being done to Blue, and immediately intervened.

“I jumped out, and I was hollering at them when I was making the u-turn,” Coffman told Fox 5 Vegas News.

“I came back, opened up my door and as soon as I opened my door, they took off.”

As the assailants made their getaway, Coffman did the incredible to ensure Blue’s safety and survival. Read his firsthand account from his Facebook page below.

Blue’s owner Erik Morrison was a mere mile away looking for her when the attackers found her, reports Fox 5 Vegas. He added, “I actually slept outside last night, just hoping she would come back, and she never did.”

He told Fox 5 Vegas the Blue was terrified after her attack, so he kept her at his home overnight until he could take her to the vet the next day to get her medical attention and have her chip scanned.

The next day, Blue was reunited with her family. To ensure her safety, Coffman even met with them first to make sure she was going back to a good home.

Update for all the concerned citizens and puppy lovers. We went to the vet this morning to have her checked out, just bruised from being kicked,” he wrote on his Facebook page. “Turns out she was chipped so I went to the owner and interviewed the family to make sure they really wanted her. They very very happy to see ‘Blue’. Blue hates when it storms and broke out of her home to start her travels. Blue has a pet pet turtle that looked to be about 50 pounds and 25 years old that hangs out with her during the day and two pet children that tug on her ears and pester her. The owners seemed really nice and genuinely concerned so hopefully Blue lives the rest of her days with her happy family. Happy ending for her night adventure.”

Blue has now been reunited with her family and her best friend, a massive turtle that also occupies the family’s home.

“She’s a member of the family,” Blue’s owner told Fox 5 Vegas. “You can’t just abandon a member of the family or give up looking.”
