Prince Harry and Meghan Markle just honored his late mother, Princess Diana, in a beautifully understated way.
The royal couple welcomed their first child, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor, last week. Since Archie’s birth on May 6, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have shared a few quick glimpses of their baby boy.
Archie’s first public appearance came during a photo-call for a few select members of the press only two days after he was born. In that interview, the baby snoozed peacefully in his dad’s arms while Meghan and Harry answered a few questions about their son and what new parenthood has been like for them.
Later, the palace released a sweet shot of Meghan and Harry introducing the baby to his great-grandparents, Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip, with Meghan’s mom Doria included in the shot as well. That photo accompanied the reveal of Archie’s name.
The latter photo led many royal fans to think about how bittersweet it is that Princess Diana will never be able to meet any of her grandkids. But this Sunday, in honor of Mother’s Day, the couple took to their official Instagram account @sussexroyal to share a new picture of Archie — and it has a very special connection to the late Princess of Wales.
“Paying tribute to all mothers today — past, present, mothers-to-be, and those lost but forever remembered,” read the caption, alongside a sweet photo of Meghan cradling baby Archie’s feet. “We honor and celebrate each and every one of you. Today is Mother’s Day in the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Kenya, Japan, and several countries across Europe. This is the first Mother’s Day for The Duchess of Sussex.”
While the reference to “those [mothers] lost but forever remembered” is a clear nod to Harry’s late mom, several royal watchers (including correspondent Roya Nikkhah) noted an additional, subtle tribute to Diana in the picture itself: the choice of flowers in the background.
“To mark Mother’s Day in the US, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have released this picture of baby Archie’s feet against a backdrop of forget-me-knots, Diana, Princess of Wales’s favorite flowers. Meghan is spending her first US Mother’s Day as a new mother with her mother Doria,” the correspondent tweeted.
