Every day, a 97-year-old man named Doug walks through the doors of the same Arby’s in Chandler, Arizona.
He orders the same meal and sits down at the same table.
The World War II veteran has been through so much in his long life. He now lives in a retirement home, and since he doesn’t have any family, he always eats by himself.
The Arby’s staff has come to depend on their daily encounters with “Mr. Doug,” as they affectionately call him. He’s become such a staple that they’ve gone so far as to give Dough their personal phone numbers. On days he can’t make it into Arby’s for lunch, the staff goes out of their way to deliver food right to his door!
The staff has adopted Doug as their own family and their kind gesture went beyond the store in Chandler, Arizona.
One day, as the holiday season approached, the Arby’s staff gave their favorite customer a $200 gift card — a surprise that left Doug completely speechless and overwhelmed.
A customer who happened to witness the kind exchange quickly snapped a photo with Doug and shared it online. The veteran’s story went viral from there.
Arby’s was so touched by the story that the company decided to take the kindness one huge step forward — they gave the Chandler Arby’s Mr. Doug free food for life. Now, the WWII veteran will always have a place to come to and all free of charge.
