Here we go again! April the giraffe is pregnant once more, zoo officials revealed Wednesday. She’s reportedly due next spring.
Animal Adventure Park owner Jordan Patch made the announcement on the Today show earlier this morning, telling fans of the internet sensation, “The results are in, and we are having a baby!”
The long-legged little one will be April’s fifth calf. This is her second calf sired by Oliver the giraffe after a boy named Taraji, who was born last April amid much online fanfare.
April went viral last year after the Harpursville, New York, zoo decided to live-stream her pregnancy on its YouTube channel. According to Us Weekly, at least 2 million people tuned in to watch her give birth to the 6-foot-tall, 129-pound Taraji after a drawn-out pregnancy.
The fact that April, now 16, is expecting once again is a major win for the giraffe population at large, Jordan revealed.
“Every calf counts,” he said. “Giraffe populations have declined by 40 percent in the past 30 years, so every calf born in a captive management program means something.”
Oh, and just in case you were wondering: April’s current pregnancy is already being live-streamed (of course) over on Animal Adventure Park’s Giraffe Cam.
“Our team of zoologists certainly know the connection she’s had [with viewers],” Jordan said. “The camera is up, and rolling, and they’re watching right now.”
