Anne Hathaway Admits She Has Decided To Quit Drinking For The Next 18 Years

by Angela Andaloro

Anne Hathaway made a surprising announcement while on the Ellen DeGeneres Show: she’s giving up alcohol for the next 18 years.

While chatting about her latest film, Serenity, she told a story about her time filming with costar Matthew McConaughey, who is known to be a bit of a party animal. Anne and Matthew were staying on separate sides of the island of Mauritius, where they shot the film. Matthew invited Anne to his side for a bar tour of the island’s best rums. Anne remembers meeting up with Matthew, but the rest of the night was a blur.

Anne attended a meeting the next day with her director, Steven Knight.

As you can imagine, trying to navigate a business meeting with a nasty hangover was not an experience she cared to relive. She realized she needed to ease up on the drinking. In fact, she vowed to stop drinking for the next 18 years. Why that particular number? Because she wants to be around and present for her 2-year-old son, Jonathan.

“I quit drinking back in October, for 18 years. I’m gonna stop drinking while my son’s living in my house just because I don’t totally love the way I do it,” Anne explained. “He’s getting to an age where he really does need me all the time in the mornings. I did one school run one day where I dropped him off at school. I wasn’t driving, but I was hungover and that was enough for me, I didn’t love that.”

More power to Anne for deciding to change her life for the positive. Anne Hathaway and Matthew McConaughey’s film, Serenity, is in theaters now!
