Five years ago, Ann Curry left the Today show in tears.

Ann had been promoted to the show’s co-host after Meredith Vieira’s leaving in June 2011. Ann co-hosted the morning show alongside Matt Lauer for just over a year before her sudden departure. When Ann announced her departure live on Today, she struggled to hold back her tears, saying, “I’m sorry I couldn’t carry the ball over the finish line, but, man, I did try.”

Her sudden and shocking departure became gossip fodder almost immediately. At the time, many people speculated that her firing had something to do with co-host Matt Lauer, with whom she lacked chemistry.

Despite her obvious heartbreak, Ann stayed silent about her firing and the reasons behind it for years.

Until now.

In an exclusive interview with People, Ann opened up about what happened for the first time in five years.

“It hurt like hell,” Ann told the magazine of her firing. “It hurt so much, but I learned a lot about myself… I’ve been so honest and true… So it hurt, but I’m also proud of myself.”

She also admitted that she now knows “what it’s like to be humiliated,” and would never wish it on anyone else.

Despite the public firing Ann endured, she has remained an important journalist and public figure. After leaving Today, Ann stayed with NBC, reporting on shows like NBC Nightly News, Dateline, and even occasionally appearing on Today in other roles. She is also a mom of two.
