Every dog deserves a loving home, but unfortunately many end up in shelters. If they’re older, they could be there for a long time.

While it’s amazing that shelters can take care of unwanted animals, they aren’t long-term solutions. Pets deserve to have families who love them and care about them, and although shelters are a big help, they’re often overpopulated and understaffed.

It’s absolutely heartbreaking for shelter workers to see, but older dogs are often looked over. People always seem to fall in love with the adorable puppies and completely ignore the mature animals.

Luckily, one shelter in Chicago is doing something to help its older dogs.

For one day, the shelter decided to waive the adoption fees for all of its long-term residents. This means people could come in and find their new best friend without having to spend a ton of money.

Although most people want to adopt puppies, there are some really great benefits to adopting an older dog. For one, older dogs often have some basic training that they’ve learned at their previous homes or at the shelter. Second, the shelter workers have spent more time with these dogs, so workers really know about the dogs’ personalities. Plus, older dogs don’t require as much constant attention and care as young puppies.

Because they’re looked over and ignored, these dogs are often extra loving when they finally find their forever homes.
