Celebrities break up and make up so frequently that it’s hard to get invested in many famous couples.
Still, there are the rare few that truly shock us when they split. When news broke nearly two years ago that Angelina Jolie filed for a divorce from Brad Pitt, you could instantly tell that Hollywood was shaken. Despite the rumored scandalous beginnings of their relationship, the two emerged as a powerful couple interested in philanthropic pursuits and raising their expanding brood in a less-Hollywood way than you’d probably expect from either. They were together for 12 years, but married for only two.
You might be wondering what’s taken the couple formerly known as Brangelina so long to make their split final. We’ve gotten trickles of information here and there, but one thing’s for certain: This is one messy breakup. Accusations have been hurled at each of them about the parenting of their six children, insults have flung, and media speculation has been rampant. The latest details indicate that this showdown between the former spouses is far from over.
Their relationship was scandalous from the very beginning.
Brad and Angelina met when they were cast as costars in Mr. & Mrs. Smith, a sexy summer action flick. Brad was still married to first wife, Jennifer Aniston, at the time.
Rumors began to swirl that the chemistry between Brad and Angelina spilled off-set. When Brad and Jennifer decided to divorce after nearly five years together in January 2005, many thought Angelina was to blame despite their statement to the contrary: “We would like to announce that after seven years together we have decided to formally separate. For those who follow these sorts of things, we would like to explain that our separation is not the result of any of the speculation reported by the tabloid media. This decision is the result of much thoughtful consideration.”
The Brangelina versus Jen media war raged throughout 2005. As paparazzi photos of Brad and Angelina together fueled the fire, Jen was asked about her thoughts on their relationship in interview after interview.
In January 2006, Angelina announced she was pregnant with Brad’s baby. Brad also adopted Angelina’s two children, Maddox and Zahara.
The couple welcomed daughter Shiloh that May. When asked about marriage, Brad told Esquire, “Angie and I will consider tying the knot when everyone else in the country who wants to be married is legally able.”
In 2007, the couple adopted Pax from Vietnam. In 2008, the brood expanded to six after Angelina announced she was pregnant with twins. Knox and Vivienne were born in July.
The next few years saw the couple plagued with rumors of getting married and breaking up. Brad appeared on the The Ellen DeGeneres Show and said they were committed to waiting until LGBT couples could marry, while still joking about pressure from his kids: “The kids are putting on the heat. They really are. They are putting on the heat.… How do I get out of this one? Somebody help me. I don’t know what the future holds.”
The following January showed that the couple was rethinking that idea when Brad expressed how important them getting married was to their kids. “We’d actually like to,” he told the Hollywood Reporter, “and it seems to mean more and more to our kids. We made this declaration some time ago that we weren’t going to do it till everyone can. But I don’t think we’ll be able to hold out. It means so much to my kids, and they ask a lot. And it means something to me, too, to make that kind of commitment.”
In April 2012, Brad and Angelina announced their engagement. They didn’t wed until August 2014. In the year between, Angelina revealed she had a preventative double mastectomy and praised Brad for being a supportive partner throughout the process.
The two filmed another movie together in late 2014, a relationship drama called By the Sea. The movie came out in late 2015, just months after it was revealed that Angelina had her ovaries and fallopian tubes removed as a preventative measure to avoid cancer.
Less than a year later, after much speculation, Angelina filed for divorce from Brad in September 2016, citing irreconcilable differences.
Legal documents tied to the divorce revealed that Angelina was seeking physical custody of their six children. Rumors claimed this was due to Angelina disagreeing with Brad’s parenting methods, as well as his “excessive” alcohol and marijuana consumption. The LA County Department of Children and Family Services also reportedly investigated Brad for accusations of child abuse, with the FBI being roped in because of an incident on an airplane that didn’t fall under LA County DCFS jurisdiction. These incidents were investigated and resolved.
Unfortunately, that left a lot of bad blood between Brad and Angelina, who continued to battle over custody of their children. After much back and forth, the two reached a temporary custody agreement that afforded Brad time with the children in London, where Angelina is currently living and working.
The latest news indicated the peace didn’t last long. Angelina filed court documents claiming that Brad hadn’t paid “meaningful” child support for the children in a year and a half. Brad’s attorneys fired back, claiming he not only gave her $8 million to buy the home she’s currently living in but has paid an additional $1.3 million in bills to Angelina and the children’s benefit. Angelina’s attorneys acknowledge the $8 million as a loan she will repay him with interest on a payment plan and a completely separate matter from the child support.
And in the latest installment of this saga, Angie’s attorney fired back, stating, “A loan is not, however, child support and to represent it as such is misleading and inaccurate.”
We hope that everyone involved in the matter, particularly the six children ages 10 to 16, sees a happy resolution. It’s a sad ending for another match made in Hollywood heaven.
