A Bogart, Georgia, woman has been bedridden for three years due to mysterious allergies.
Laura Wharton began to experience unusual symptoms that left her in pain and unable to walk or leave the house. She lost 35 pounds and become dangerously thin.
“I was very ill, and my family and I made 15 trips to the Mayo Clinic,” she recalled. “But doctors still couldn’t figure out what was wrong.”
Indeed, no one could figure out what was causing the constant reactions in Laura’s body. It was only after she visited an allergy specialist that she got her diagnosis.
Laura is allergic to everything from dust to food. Her body confuses harmless substances for germs and attempts to fight them off.
“It was discovered that I had Mast Cell Activation Syndrome. And after starting treatment, I found I was able to sleep and eat again,” Laura told Caters News. “I slowly regained some of my strength and life back over the course of another year — and am still gradually recovering day by day.”
Struggling to cope, she returned to her old stomping ground: a dance studio.
“There was one point where I was close to giving up, but after visiting the dance studio, I knew I had to get better to be able to perform again,” she explained.
Once diagnosed with Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS), Laura was treated and now uses an air purifier that can clear particles she may react to.
“After a pretty miraculous recovery, I returned to competitive dance this year, and it was such a wonderful, energizing experience. Onstage, I come to life whenever I perform,” she said.
