Less than 25 percent of conjoined twins survive their first day of life. Alex and Angel Mendoza beat the odds in an extraordinary way. When they entered the world in the summer of 2008, they entered it as one. Ashley and Johnny already had two kids when they were surprised by the news they were pregnant with the twins. But that was only the beginning.

The technician, realizing something was odd about Ashley’s ultrasound, ran to get the doctor. As it turned out, the twins were conjoined — connected below their sternums to their pelvises. However, Alex and Angel had no liver and at first, doctors suggested an abortion. But Ashley and Johnny were defiant parents and remained determined to carry the boys for as long as possible. “They’re here, they have four legs, four arms, two hearts, everything…” Ashley said.

Ashley gave birth and the twins were monitored by an amazing medical team 24/7. Though surgery to separate Alex and Angel posed a major risk, it was the only chance the boys had to live normal, independent lives. The boys were successfully separated in January 2009. Until then, Ashley reveled in the fact her miracle babies were shaped like a “perfect little heart.”
