Indiana man Derek Starnes and his wife were on vacation in Longboat Key, Florida. Before their trip, they went online and found the perfect Airbnb to rent for the occasion.
But things took a horrifying turn during their stay after they noticed a small black hole on the side of the smoke detector hanging in the master bedroom.
When Derek — who works in tech — began inspecting the smoke detector, he realized the hole was actually a hidden camera. And it was pointed directly at their bed.
They found another hidden camera in the living room.
Feeling outraged and violated, the couple decided they couldn’t let the homeowner get away with this. They went straight to the authorities and ended up uncovering more highly disturbing information. Watch the video below to see how the situation unfolded from there.
As it turns out, the homeowner had more than 40 reviews on Airbnb since he began renting out his home two years ago!
Derek and his wife are still in distress over the horrific discovery. They hope that by sharing their story, previous renters will also come forward and future clients will take heed.

Update: Airbnb responded in a statement to Fox 13: “As soon as we were made aware, we permanently banned this individual from our community and fully supported the affected guests. Our team has reached out to local law enforcement to aid them with their investigation of the egregious offense and we hope justice is served. We take privacy issues extremely seriously and have a zero-tolerance policy against this behavior.”
