Sometimes it’s not a contestant’s talent that gets them noticed in a singing competition, but rather his or her powerful backstory and bravery.

Here, we meet a young singer from “The Voice” who was sent home but still managed to touch the hearts of millions.

Tomos, 11, competed in “The Voice Kids” and chose a song he sadly relates to. “Piece by Piece” by Kelly Clarkson is about her experience of being abandoned by her father at a young age. Tomos knows this heartache firsthand as his dad left his family when he was just five years old. His mother was left to raise him on her own.

Danny Jones, one of the singing coaches, didn’t expect to be so overcome with emotion during Tomos’ performance.

Then he made a confession to his fellow judges, the audience and the viewers at home. As it turned out, “Piece by Piece” is a song to which he, too, can relate.

“My dad left us when we were 18,” he admitted. “It really, really got to me that moment.” Danny then broke down in tears, realizing it was Tomos’ amazingly brave audition that hit a nerve.

This performance touched so many viewers that commenters began flooding social media to share similar stories about overcoming the abandonment of a loved one.
