It’s that time of year again: The Met Gala has come and gone, and now we can sit back and admire (or laugh about) all of the outfits worn by the world’s most famous celebrities.
Every year, the exclusive, invite-only event raises money for the benefit of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in New York City. Each annual event has a specific theme, and that theme correlates to the theme of that year’s exhibition at the Costume Institute. Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour has acted as the chair of the event for the past several decades, overseeing the benefit committee and helping put together the elite, highly selective guest list.
For 2019, the Met Gala theme was “Camp,” based on Susan Sontag’s 1964 essay “Camp: Notes on Fashion.” The “exuberant” and theatrical aesthetic of camp was expected to be represented in the famous attendees’ outfits — and boy, did plenty of them deliver!
Here are 20 of the most memorable (and outlandish!) celebrity looks from the 2019 Met Gala.
As per usual, Lady Gaga owned the evening, going through a series of dramatic, stripped-down costume changes all while walking the pink carpet.
Jemima Kirke and Lena Dunham
Real-life best friends and former Girls costars Lena Dunham and Jemima Kirke flaunted fetish-themed latex outfits at the event.
Ever eccentric, Oscar-winning actor and Thirty Seconds to Mars frontman Jared Leto arrived in a biblically inspired bright red garment, carrying a bust replica of his own head.
The Mindy Project creator and star was a vision in gold for the 2019 Met Gala. She even sported long, icy blonde hair just for the event!
Cole Sprouse and Lili Reinhart
Riverdale stars and real-life couple Cole Sprouse and Lili Reinhart really took the camp theme to heart with colorful outfits and Lili’s fun makeup.
Ever a fashion icon, actress Laverne Cox looked like the height of elegance in a striking all-black number, with a touch of color from her blue eye makeup and wig.
People haven’t stopped talking about singer and former One Direction member Harry Styles’ decidedly gender-bending Met Gala outfit. And for good reason! The black sheer pantsuit was instantly iconic.
Singer Katy Perry walked the carpet (sans fiancé Orlando Bloom) dressed as a literal chandelier. Where’s Sia when you need her?
Billy Porter’s magnificent and gloriously campy entrance was the talk of the night. The actor was carried on a litter by a troupe of six strapping shirtless men.
According to Vogue, the actor’s “theatrical nod to Ancient Egypt” included a custom “Sun God” outfit by The Blonds. The striking costume featured a bejeweled catsuit with 10-foot wings, a 24-karat gold headpiece, custom gold-leaf Giuseppe Zanotti shoes, and jewels by Andreoli, John Hardy, and Oscar Heyman.
What a look!
Elle Fanning’s bright coral two-piece outfit and hairdo was very 1970s-inspired, but it was her necklace and manicure that stole the show. The oversized charm necklace included the words “camp” as well as “The Met,” and her nails had individual charms (including french fries and candy wrappers) hanging off each of them. Quirky!
Saoirse Ronan’s outfit was a bit more understated than some of the night’s other looks but undeniably elegant and meticulously detailed nonetheless.
Can’t forget the Kardashian-Jenner matriarch herself! Mama Kris looked nothing like her usual self in a blonde wig at the 2019 Met Gala. In fact, some thought she looked more like one of her famous daughters! The hair is giving me definite Khloé vibes.
Grammy winner Kacey Musgraves went full-on hot pink Barbie with her 2019 Met Gala outfit choice, right down to her shiny pointed shoes and magenta sunglasses. Plus, check out that blow-dryer purse!
Model Gigi Hadid looked like something out of a fashionable metallic dream-nightmare when she walked the pink carpet at the Met Gala.
Ezra Miller is known for his out-there and unique fashion choices, and this year’s Met Gala outfit was no different. While his pinstripe suit — complete with a long train — was definitely trendy, it was his elaborate makeup (making us feel like we had blurred vision) that really grabbed everyone’s attention. According to Harper’s Bazaar, the actor enlisted Vancouver-based makeup artist Mimi Choi to create the illusion.
Kylie and Kendall Jenner
While it’s not particularly clear what was campy about the Jenner sisters’ outfits, one thing is for sure — they were certainly bright, feathery, form-fitting, and memorable!
Big sis Kim Kardashian attended as well (though Kourtney Kardashian and Khloé Kardashian were both absent from this year’s event). She wore a skintight, extremely sheer outfit that gave the illusion she was dripping wet — and accentuated her unbelievably tiny waistline.
With a bit of “magic,” Zendaya’s Cinderella-inspired gown actually lit up — with some help from her stylist Law Roach. How very Disney princess of her!
According to People, the dress was created just for Zendaya, made possible by the Hilfiger team and their collaboration with Hussein Chalayan after Law Roach was inspired by Hilfiger’s robotic dresses in the brand’s Spring 2007 collection.
Last but certainly not least, the queen herself: Céline Dion! The Canadian singer hit the pink carpet in a dramatic feathered ensemble, complete with a headpiece. A true Vegas icon in the flesh!
