Every single year on August 1st, like clockwork, the entire city of Warsaw, Poland, comes to a complete halt for about one minute. The reason why completely surprised me: these citizens come together and freeze, wherever they are in the city, to commemorate the Warsaw Uprising, in which 200,000 lives were tragically taken during a failed operation of the Polish resistance aimed at liberating the German-occupied capital. It was an event that left Warsaw in ruins, and this minute honors those who passed. The sight of so many strangers coming together, frozen in the street, gave me chills.
